Bio:
Janet Jackson (born May 16, 1966), is an American singer, songwriter, record producer, dancer, and actress. Becoming one of the biggest female pop and R&B stars of the '80s and '90s, Jackson's career as a hitmaker has been a model of consistency, rivaling Madonna and Whitney Houston in terms of pop chart success over the long haul.
Her real success started in 1986 with her album Control, which topped the pop and R&B album charts, and thereafter the series of hit albums. Some of them were "What Have You Done For Me Lately", "Nasty", "When I Think of You", "Let’s Wait Awhile" and "The Pleasure Principle. In 1991, she jumped from A&M to Virgin.
Once on Virgin, Jackson set about revamping her sound and image. With her 1993 Virgin debut of janet. she unveiled a sexy, seductive, fully adult persona. The album's lead single, "That's the Way Love Goes," became Jackson's biggest hit ever, spending eight weeks at number one. It was followed by a predictably long parade of Top Ten hits -- "If," the number one ballad "Again," "Because of You," "Any Time, Any Place," "You Want This." janet., showing at number one, made it her third straight chart-topping album and it went on to sell nearly seven million copies.
Her next album, The Velvet Rope, appeared in 1997 and was touted as her most personal and intimate work to date. Jackson returned with a new album, All for You, in 2001, which largely continued the sensual tone of janet. and The Velvet Rope. It debuted at number one, selling over 600,000 copies in its first week alone. The title track was issued as the album's first single and quickly topped the charts, followed by another sizable hit in "Someone to Call My Lover."
Jackson spent much of 2001 and 2002 on the road supporting All for You. In March 2004, Jackson's eighth studio album, Damita Jo, was released, debuting at number two. Virgin Records released Jackson's ninth studio album, 20 Y.O., on September 26, 2006. The album debuted at number two on Billboard's albums charts, selling over 296,000 copies in its first week. In July 2007, Jackson changed labels and signed a new record contract with Island Records. Jackson's tenth studio album, Discipline, will be released on February 26, 2008, under the supervision of label head Antonio "L.A." Reid.
Janet Jackson is ranked by Billboard magazine as the ninth most successful act in rock and roll history, and the second most successful female artist in pop music history. She has sold over 100 million albums worldwide. Guinness World Records lists her as the world's most searched-for person in Internet history. Her recent film Why Did I Get Married? became her third consecutive film to open at number one at the box office, following Poetic Justice (1993) and Nutty Professor II: The Klumps.
Since 1986, Jackson has scored ten number-one singles on the Billboard Hot 100 and sixteen number-one singles on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs. She is also the second musician with the largest amount of number ones on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play, with seventeen dance chart-toppers in total. In addition to her commercial accomplishments, Jackson has won five Grammy Awards, received a nomination at the 66th Academy Awards, received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1990, and was honored with the first "mtvICON" tribute from MTV in 2001. Recently, she placed seventh on Forbes Top 10 Richest Women in Entertainment list. She has also had eighteen top ten singles in Europe.
